I've not really used Yahoo's podcast service - have you? Odds are that you haven't, which is problematic; visitors have declined at a 20% annual rate, and when Internet advertising is still based on number of eyeballs (not to mention ears), that's bad news. So, Yahoo has announced in a big underlined font that as of October 31st, the Yahoo Podcasts (Beta) will be no more. Industry folks are also speculating that Yahoo Music Unlimited, Yahoo's service meant to compete against other buffet sites like Rhapsody and Napster, may be shutting down or taking a new approach. So far no announcements have been made but people in suits (or perhaps business casual) are meeting round the clock, with grimaces and tech argot filling the atmosphere. Yahoo Music made a big splash when it debuted with bargain basement prices, but hasn't done much to differentiate itself from its competitors in the meantime, particularly in light of Napster's name cachet, Rhapsody's various partnerships, and Apple's continuing dominance.
