We heard the new single from YACHT, "Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire)," two days ago when their label, DFA Records, premiered it as part of their weekly web series. Aside from being able to virtually spin the synthesizer-laden, apocalyptic tune, we weren't sure where it was going to end up.
Until now, of course, as the duo of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans have announced that their fifth album, Shangri-La, is coming this June. The record was recorded with Bobby Birdman at several locations, including Jackpot! Studios and temporary living spaces in Los Angeles. According to a release, YACHT is using the album to assert that "the future is a blank slate upon which anything can be imposed." There are also several references to the idea of "Utopia," which YACHT apparently believes is a personal concept and only sustainable in our minds.
In other words, expect some out-there mindfuckery on Shangri-La, which should also bring out everyone's inner dancing machine. It's due out June 21.
