Seemingly out of nowhere, XXXTENTACION has released a project entitled Revenge. The EP/album is a collection of songs that were previously only available on X’s SoundCloud, excluding the viral track, “Look At Me,” which has been on all streaming platforms for awhile now.
He opens Revenge with the viral hit, and follows it with his most heartfelt track to date, “I Don’t Wanna Do This Anymore.” It’s reminiscent of The Weeknd’s drugged-out R&B. X shows off his softer side, pleading, “I should’ve let you know that you’re my only one.” The track is hardly new; it has over 34 million streams on SoundCloud.
Also on Revenge is the Florida rapper’s recent pop collaboration with Diplo, “Looking for a Star.” Diplo turns X’s voice into a robotic, monotone cry, while he sings, “And where did you go as I slipped? / I can’t seem to get out my head.” “King” is a slow-burning acoustic guitar ballad, until it explodes into full-on screamo. The genre-blending project closes with another SoundCloud banger, “RIP Roach,” which features $ki Mask The Slump God. It’s quintessential XXXTENTACION: explosive bass, jarring lyrics, and lots of shouting. Danny Brown gave him the seal of approval with a tweet quoting lyrics from “RIP Roach.”

While this project is a surprise, it wasn’t a mystery that X was working on new music. He recently tweeted a video of him in the studio working on a folk-style song. The video was captioned “REVENGE…” However, the music from said video doesn’t appear to be on this project.
Last week, XXXTENTACION teamed up with Rich Chigga and Keith Ape for the mesmeric banger, “Gospel.” Fans of the rising rapper may be disappointed to learn that Revenge doesn’t come with any music we haven’t already heard. On the other hand, at least it’s available to stream in more places! Check out Revenge below.
