Listen: Xray Eyeballs “Crystal” (Prefix Premiere)

Brooklyn’s latest envoys of lullaby noise, Xray Eyeballs, are no longer content to reserve their dark ultra-violence for frequenters of NYC’s underground garage rock circuit. The five-piece group includes three members of Golden Triangle (whose plan to pay rent last summer by selling BMWs hopefully paid off), and they are preparing the release of their debut LP, Not Nothing, due out on April 19 on Kanine Records. Hype around the album’s first single, “Crystal,” has been circulating around the web as early as mid-December, including a feature on Brooklyn Vegan, but fans of the band couldn’t actually hear the track teased to them for months.

Until now. “Crystal” recalls the darker moments of Psychocandy, both malevolent and hypnotic, with a nihilistic go-to-sleep-because-life-is-fucked mentality. O.J. San Felipe, the group’s de-facto leader, is a self-proclaimed advocate of songs about “love, loss, dark vices, and sex”, and “Crystal” appears to detail a drugged-out argument between a couple in the process of “coming down” off of whatever highly illegal substance they’ve been tripping on. “I can dissappear,” San Felipe moans at the song’s opening with his slightly atonal yet arresting vocal delivery, both unsettling and perverse. This is the type of song that would have been a heroin anthem at Warhol’s Factory.
