Sony showed off its SingStar game at CES, a sort of adversarial karaoke that showed the creative flexibility the system had before getting wrapped up in horsepower and Blu-Ray wars with the PS3. Sony reps brought on two fellows who probably don't even know Franz Ferdinand the Archduke of Austria, much less how to sing "Do You Want To." They couldn't even get the "do-do-do" parts right. Be glad I have no audio; it honestly may have been the most horrifying karaoke session ever. Microsoft had a couple stations with its version of Guitar Hero II, due in a couple of months. The white guitar looks decent, with solid fret buttons and a whammy bar that felt a little stiff. In case you didn't know, Guitar Hero doesn't feature original vocals. Most sound decent enough, but while your intrepid tech reporter rocked the hell out of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box," the vocal rendition was almost poor enough to make him quit early. Feature wise, the Xbox 360 version will allow users to download new tracks and post scores to Xbox Live, although competition over Live will not be included, at least not initially. It will also include an additional ten songs out of the box--see the jump for an initial list of five of the tracks and pictures of the guitar in action. The tracks are:
Billion Dollar Babies - Alice Cooper
Hush - Deep Purple
Dead! - My Chemical Romance
Life Wasted - Pearl Jam
Rock N Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer

Xbox 360 lets you play songs from your Zune while you race. Is Thom Yorke really appropriate racing music?
I blame Guitar Hero for Singstar.Wait, it's not by the same company, right?

Nah, SingStar is a first party Sony game - which suddenly makes the fact that that they demoed it make sense. I thought that was the case but hadn't fact checked it yet, probably partly because I blocked out the experience and I caught a sneek peek at some scenes from Spiderman 3 directly after.Red Octane does Guitar Hero, or maybe Activision since they bought them out.
