White Stripes Plotting Comeback on Late Night with Conan O'Brien?

Jack White’s been busy with the Raconteurs, but it’s been a while since we heard anything from the White Stripes. A 2007 tour was canceled after Meg White claimed to be suffering from anxiety problems, and little has been heard from the band since. Meg did surface at a Raconteurs show in June 2008, and it’s widely expected that a new White Stripes album will surface some time in 2009.

Now the rumor mill is gathering pace, as a White Stripes performance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien appears to have been scheduled. According to this site, the band will appear on Late Night on February 20, which would be the first time the band has made any kind of public appearance since 2007.

The story is only a rumor at the present time, but the band has a healthy relationship with O’Brien, who famously booked them to play every week on the show back in 2003. The official schedule for Late Night only runs until February 13, so watch this space for further details. [via The Modern Age]

That would appear to be Conan's last Late Night show, before he moves to L.A. to take over the Tonight Show. Seems plausible...

I didn't realize that would be Conan's last show, thanks E.G. It definitely seems plausible.

This "rumor" has been well confirmed by now. I'm really looking forward to it; The White Stripes are one of the most original and innovative and just plain exciting bands of this decade. (And Jack White's other band, The Raconteurs, is up there too.)

By the way, I don't believe The White Stripes played "every week of 2003" on Conan's show as the article states; they were off touring much of that year. What they did was they played on his show every night of *one* week. I forget which week that was, but it was great. Not just the awesome music, but some hilarious comedy bits too.

This time around I hope we'll hear a bit about this upcoming rock documentary on the electric guitar, titled "It Might Get Loud." It focuses on three iconic guitarists from different generations: Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, The Edge from U2, and Jack White. It got rave reviews at Sundance and other film fests, hopefully it will get a wide theater release.

Congrats to Conan on snagging the Tonight Show, and also for his excellent taste in music. Few bands today are doing more than Jack and Meg to keep rock music alive and thrilling.
