Update: It's totally true. Go to Third Man Records to read the full letter from Jack and Meg.
There are lightning quick stories jumping up everywhere that, if they're true, are of a distinct "Holy Shit!" quality: According to a variety of news outlets, The White Stripes have broken up. That's right; one of indie rock's most beloved bands is calling it quits after close to 15 years. The group reportedly put a message up on its website that read the following:
“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health,” the statement reads. “It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band have it stay that way.” “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on any of us and we are truly grateful.”
The reason I write "reportedly" up there is that the band's website is currently down. This all could be a hoax, or it could be that the band's site has been crushed under demand. But for now, at least, it seems the Stripes are kaputt. See you at ATP in 2019.
