White Stripes Break Up

Update: It's totally true. Go to Third Man Records to read the full letter from Jack and Meg.

There are lightning quick stories jumping up everywhere that, if they're true, are of a distinct "Holy Shit!" quality: According to a variety of news outlets, The White Stripes have broken up. That's right; one of indie rock's most beloved bands is calling it quits after close to 15 years. The group reportedly put a message up on its website that read the following:

“The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health,” the statement reads. “It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band have it stay that way.” “The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on any of us and we are truly grateful.”

The reason I write "reportedly" up there is that the band's website is currently down. This all could be a hoax, or it could be that the band's site has been crushed under demand. But for now, at least, it seems the Stripes are kaputt. See you at ATP in 2019.

White Stripes were still together? lol...

"The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. "

So the obvious question, if they are saying what I think they just said, does this, in fact, mean that the White Stripes Music, iconography etc have now been let PUBLIC DOMAIN?

The whosey whatsit?

an overrated band perfect for a zeitgeist characterized by all that is overrated.

can't really say this came as a surprise to me. their massive popularity, on the other hand, was.

not to say that they weren't a good band. but a two piece who put out three records on Sympathy For The Recording Industry suddenly blowing up to the size they did? fairly unbelievable.

overrated?? are you kidding?

First The Raconteurs and now the Stripes --- what's jack got up his sleeve?

aren't they related or something?

That's like Wham! breaking up. Does it really matter? Jack is prolific and will make music for a long time to come, Meg just wants to live the life of a midwestern Hausfrau.

The chick in that band is a terrible drummer. She can't even keep a beat.

I'm not usually a grammar nazi but you'd think an official statement on their site would use the word "myriad" correctly - I assume they went with that to sound smart but since they effed up the usage I would say that backfired

I like Meg's drumming

this is bullshyt. if we the people now own the white stripes then we the people demand a new fuking album! and a tour! man, i'm totally depressed for the rest of the day now :( maybe longer. ugh!

YAY! Everything after their first album was utter cack, so I'm glad I won't have to hear their crap anymore. Overrated? Hell yes.
