What new Jay Leno show will mean for late night music

In a post about the Roots accepting the house band job on the Jimmy Fallon show yesterday, I briefly mentioned how Leno was getting his own show on NBC, Monday-Friday at 10 p.m. EST. What I didn’t consider, until this post on Idolator, was what implications that development would have on the music business.

Leno’s show, at its current time-slot, is a prime destination for artists looking to promote their albums, and at a prime-time time slot, the impact of a booking on Leno’s show could be astronomical, as artists could be promoted in prime time outside of Grey’s Anatomy promotions.

Leno tends to stick with artists who are currently rocketing up the pop charts, but this could open up later shows (like Conan’s, Fallon’s, and Carson Daly’s) to more left field choices for bands, meaning bands signed to indies could find themselves playing late night TV shows they would have previously had no shot at getting on. I totally agree. Leno usually has the worst of the worst (country adult contemporary, and Nickelback/that band that sings "falliinn even mooorre in love wiiiihhhthh youuu" or whatever.....), and Conan usually keeps in pretty interesting. However, Conan will now be in LA witch will greatly affect the guests he has and the overall feel of the show. Moving it to an earlier slot will affect it too, I'm sure.

Wait NBC is going to give up a WHOLE primetime hour each night for another talk show?? hmmm....

I think it somewhat steals the thunder from Conan taking the Tonight Show gig.

It is probably a hell of a lot cheaper to produce a late night talk show than a prime-time drama. NBC is saving some pennies. And I doubt that you will see any indie type band on Leno or even on Conan now. Its all about the money, folks. And Deerhunter ain't gonna bring in the ratings.

Yeah, talk shows and reality TV are much cheaper to make than dramas or sitcoms. I expect they'll stick with this experiment even if the initial viewing figures aren't that great (unless the recession suddenly recedes).
