On Tuesday Feb. 9 Lil Wayne, arguably the biggest rapper working right now, will begin a one-year jail sentence at the notorious Rikers Island jail complex. If you've ever wondered what happens to someone like Lil Wayne in the joint-- does he get special treatment, does he got treated badly, does he just hire big dudes to watch out for him-- MTV spoke to NYPD detective Derrick Parker to find out.
"Lil Wayne is gonna be OK," Parker said. "While he's in jail, it's a matter of fact they may not put him with the general population because of who he is and his popularity. They might lock him down and let him come out with a supervisor and stuff like that [when he's] in the main area-- but he's definitely going to be treated differently."
MTV also spoke to retired corrections officer Charles Reid, who worked at Rikers for 21 years. According to Reid, Lil Wayne won't have to cut his dreads as he's previously stated, but he won't get to keep his iPod. If Weezy isn't transferred upstate, it's likely that he'll be placed in a dormitory-like space with a lot of beds. Sounds sorta like Hogwarts, right?
According to Parker, with good behavior Wayne could be out in as little as eight months, which means he'll be back to steak dinners with syrup before you know it.
