It’s always interesting when an indie rock band gets to collaborate with a major music star, so when influential indie powerhouse the Afghan Whigs surprised the audience at a show in Brooklyn last night with R&B superstar Usher during the encore, fans couldn’t help but go giddy.
The two artists teamed up for a breathtaking, rock-tinged performance of Usher’s chilling 2012 hit “Climax,” with the Whigs providing heady dynamics and theatrical power to the already emotionally vibrant song. Watch below:
As Spin points out, the two artists previously collaborated live at SXSW in 2013 for three songs, including “Climax,” but apparently they’ve become so fond of each other’s talents that it warranted another incredible performance. Hey, when it works, it works.
The Afghan Whigs reunited in 2012 after a long hiatus and have been performing ever since. The band has recorded a number of now classic albums, not the least of which is 1993’s Gentlemen, the 21st birthday of which the band were celebrating at last night’s gig.
