"The 808 changed the motherfuckin' world," says Felix Da Housecat in the documentary Planet Rock And Other Tales Of The 808. It's hard to argue with him there--the simple-sounding drum machine has spread its rhythm to electronic, hip-hop, and beyond since first being popularized by Arthur Baker.
The longtime producer used it for the 1982 single "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, and now he's co-producing a documentary on the song and the rise of the 808. The film will be released in 2013, and it features a diverse range of music luminaries talking about the subjects, from ?uestlove and Diplo to Paul Okenfold and Skrillex.
