“That’s the right way to sing,” Tony Bennett said of Amy Winehouse on The Daily Show this past Thursday night. The pair sang together on “Body and Soul,” a track from Bennett’s guest-heavy Duets II, which just topped the Billboard 200 albums chart. Though the 85-year-old singer praised Amy Winehouse in the interview, he also revealed that she knew she was going to die.
"She was in trouble at that time because she had a couple of engagements that she didn’t keep. What people didn’t realize was that she knew that she was in a lot of trouble, that she wasn’t going to live,” Bennett said. “It wasn’t drugs, it was alcohol, till the end.”
Bennett revealed that Winehouse was reluctant to make the song too, which is her last recording to-date.
“It’s such a sad thing,” Bennett said. “Since Elvis Presley and the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and the whole contemporary change that came in, she was the only singer that sang what I call ‘the right way’... she was a little apprehensive about the whole thing when we were doing the record.”
Watch Tony Bennett say more on Amy Winehouse and Duets II, which he says brought together “the most important, most popular young artists today.”
