Tina Fey was a featured speaker at the Center for Reproductive Rights Inaugural Gala in New York City Wednesday. As anyone familiar with the former Saturday Night Live writer and 30 Rock creator could imagine, she had some very harsh words for GOP members like Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock’s recent controversial statements about rape.
In a video from the speech, Fey started out with guns blazing toward the politicians who have made these statements: “I wish we could have an honest and respectful dialog about these complicated issues,” said Fey, “but it seems that we can’t right now. And if I have to listen to one more gray-faced man with a two-dollar haircut explain to me about what rape is, I’m gonna lose my mind!”
Fey continued to compare the current political climate toward woman as similar to the sexist views presented in AMC’s Mad Men. She also attacked Akin’s “legitimate rape” claims in a very funny and poignant way. Midway through describing Akin’s idea of “legitimate rape,” she stopped and said, “You know what? I can’t even finish this sentence without getting dumber.”
