Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos visited the WBEZ studio for the latest episode of "Sound Opinions." Hosts Jim and Greg chatted with him about the band's origins, their quick succession to fame, and how his struggle with addiction and mental illness has influenced his songwriting. Angelakos also performed stripped down versions of "Sleepyhead" (the song that catapulted the group to instant stardom) and "Constant Conversations," from their most recent release, Gossamer.
To say Angelakos' solo take on Passion Pit material strays wholly from the dancehall, is stating the obvious; still, it's nice to see the frontman demonstrate a vulnerability that can only be achieved in this kind of intimate setting. There's a slight sad quality that would not feel out of place in a down-on-his-luck piano dive. Stream/download the full episode, including Angelakos' interview, here. [Pitchfork]
