Brooklyn resident MeLo-X is a pretty huge fan of the work of Maxwell. So much so that the rapper/producer/DJ dropped an EP of remixes of tracks off the soul singer’s BLACKsummers’night album. And one of those remixes apparently caught the attention of Maxwell’s camp. They purchased “The Highest,” which tackles “Bad Habits,” and used it for his world tour in 2009.
Since then, MeLo-X has gone on to release one of last year’s finest and most slept-on free projects, More Merch. It’s success helped him travel overseas for a tour of Europe and afford him the luxury to go back to the remix EP to showcase exactly how he made the track. This live, in-studio performance of “The Highest” demonstrates exactly how much MeLo-X has deconstructed and rebuilt “Bad Habits,” which is nearly unrecognizable once he’s through with it.
MeLo-X has two projects — the MELO Series of beat tapes and an instrumental album called Sonic Intercourse — due out this year.
