Liturgy is nominally a black metal band, but more often than not they’re blurring the boundaries between metal and performance art. Heck, frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix wrote an online manifesto describing his outfit as “transcendental black metal,” and recently the band has paired down to two guitars and a drum machine.
So it’s pretty perfect that Liturgy would take Shellac’s caustic “Prayer To God” and turn it into a beatboxed a capella performance for AV Club’s Undercover series. Hunt-Hendrix definitely puts his particular stamp on the thing; watch the awesome undertaking below.
