In her signature raw and quirky demeanor, actress, writer, filmmaker and star of HBO’s Girls, Lena Dunham, appeared in and endorsed Barack Obama in a video posted on the President’s YouTube channel.
The monologue starts with Dunham likening her first voting experience to losing her virginity: “Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy.”
Though the equating of voting to losing one’s virginity may come off as controversial to some, Dunham is charming and increasingly humorous throughout the video as she mentions issues close to women voters like health insurance, birth control, and the “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.”
When speaking of marriage equality, she reasons, “You don’t want a guy who thinks that gay people should never have beautiful complicated weddings like the kind we see on Bravo or TLC.”
Light-hearted and of course aimed at her primarily young following, Dunham makes a final comparison: “My first time voting was amazing. It was this line in the sand – before I was a girl, now I’m a woman. I went to the polling station, pulled back the curtain; I voted for Barack Obama.”
