Years ago, commentators loved to talk about the late night TV wars. Once Johnny Carson retired, there was no clear king of late night, so a natural rivalry developed between Jay Leno and David Letterman, his de facto heirs. There's been plenty of controversy since then, including when Conan O'Brien was hired, and then fired, to take over for Leno, as well as general griping about who would take which timeslot and what ratings mattered more.
However, most talk show hosts seem to have lightened up in the past few years. In particular, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien and Stephen Colbert have developed a rapport with one another, often appearing on one another's programs and being genuinely friendly toward each other.
That was on display last night, as Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert graciously appearred as dual guests on Jimmy Kimmel's show. Check out all the segments below, and pay attention to the king's welcome the two receive, essentially marking a high point in late night peacetime.
