Nothing about the Tommy Wirkola directed Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters seems at all related to the Brothers Grimm fairytale, except maybe for the names and the witch thing. But that’s the point of these movies–to re-invent history to such a great degree that it’s no longer recognizable, historical, and/or comprehensible.
Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in this action “sequel” that picks up 15 years after the original story where brother and sister are bounty hunters whose singular goal is to rid the world of witches. As compensation for a really stupid plot, Wirkola gives us what we actually want (and why we even bothered watching the trailer in the first place): sick cartoonish violence.
To wit: the red band trailer. Supposedly, at one point Paramount considered slapping this bad boy with a PG-13 rating, but that comical suggestion was quickly nixed. They knew no one’s winning awards with one-liners like “We’ve gotten the taste of blood–witch blood ,” so you might as well have exploding bodies. [Indiewire]
