Like many bands, Girls are in-between the two Coachella festivals at present, but they found a way to fill the time by appearing on Conan O’Brien’s show last night. “Love Like a River” is taken from the much-praised 2011 album Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and is delivered here amid huge bunches of flowers. It's not hard to picture Morrissey looking on enviously, the back pocket of his jeans twitching nervously. It’s a further demonstration of Christopher Owens’ capable grasp on a certain kind of doomed romanticism, coupled with a love of classic rock and gospel that closes in on the kind of territory inhabited by Neil Young and Spiritualized at various points in the song.
