Directed by Adam Bainbride, Blood Orange’s new music video for “Chamakay” finds him reconnecting with his estranged relatives in Guyana. The video depicts Dev Hynes’ encounter as a touching and moving moment for the artist and his family. It is truly touching when he meets his 92-year-old grandfather. Moments like these are rarely publicly shown.
The track also features the vocals of Carolina Polachek from Brooklyn dream pop band Chairlift.
Below Hynes gives a little background on the encounter:
I decided to visit Georgetown, Guyana for the first time, the town where my mother is from. She, herself has not been back for 30 years, 3 years before I was born. I tracked down family members, including my 92 year old grandfather, who I had never met before. In this video you will see our first ever meeting.
The wonderful female vocals on this track are performed by Caroline Polachek from the band “Chairlift”. Special thanks to Yulandi, Tyrese Gomes, Samantha Urbani, The Crandons & Adam Bainbridge.
The track will also be featured on his upcoming album Cupid Deluxe. You can now purchase the track off iTunes here.
