Watch A Documentary, ‘Still Shining,’ On J Dilla

If my Twitter feed is any indication, hip-hop heads across the world are celebrating the birthday of J Dilla, who passed away almost five years ago and would have been 37 years old today. And one way they are doing so is through watching this documentary, J.Dilla: Still Shining, by B.Kyle. The nearly 40-minute piece was put together in 2006 , the same year that Dilla passed. The director explains that the documentary is “for [Dilla’s] fans and supporters who knew of his accomplishments before February 2006 and those that have grown to appreciate his genius.” It provides an in-depth look into the life of Dilla and his work and it features words from his closest friends and family, including his mother, Questlove, Phat Kat, and Karriem Riggins.

Happy birthday, James “J Dilla/Jay Dee” Yancey.
