Washed Out Shares Infectious New Song and Video for “Get Lost”

It's the perfect song for a summer party in Los Angeles

Ernest Greene, the singer, songwriter, and producer known as Washed Out, has shared a new song, “Get Lost.” It’s the first piece of music from the chillwave artist since his 2013 album, Paracosm.

“Get Lost” opens with stomping jazzy piano chords hitting slightly off tempo. Eccentric brass and wind instruments make funky embellishments against the house-inflected canvas of sound. His vocals are mostly unintelligible — covered in amorphous reverb effects. Every word he sings is followed by a ghost-like trail of the last syllable off his tongue, making his voice less of a communicator and more of a bed of sound. The entire track is anchored by four-on-the-floor dance drums, shuffling percussion, and rhythmic whistles and bells. Lush and club-ready, “Get Lost” is definitely a song for a summer night — whether it’s the beginning, middle, or the end of the party.

The song also comes with a video via the Los Angeles label, Stones Throw. Directed by Harvey Benschoter, it features retro magazine cutouts bustling through L.A. before going out on a lit-up night on the town. The summery music is complimented by beachside views and nods to warm weather. The video serves as a lighthearted visual companion, falling between a psychedelic experience and something from a pop art exhibit.

“Get Lost” features many familiar elements we’ve come to know and expect from Washed Out. Though, it feels more intentionally upbeat. Much of Greene’s work prior to now has been characterized by its chilled-out and laid-back sound. Many of his biggest songs felt like tunes you could put on before bed.

We presently do not know whether “Get Lost” will be part of a forthcoming larger body of work. However, with a tour scheduled for this summer, we are hopeful that this is the first indication that a Paracosm follow-up is imminent. Check out more information about the upcoming dates here.
