We had our fun last year on Prefix when the Vivian Girls made a crack at how normal people behave. Some of us thought the initial comment was mean. Some of us thought the apology was superfluous and cynical. Most all of us thought the band's debut album was overhyped, whether or not we actually liked it.
A year later, when the Vivian Girls have gone through the traditional boom/bust hype cycle with their follow-up Everything Goes Wrong, we can all take a moment to reflect on how stupid we ever were for caring about such a minor online controversy. Cassie Ramone points out that she was making fun of frat boys (y'know, the ones who normally throw dollar bills at female performers). The rest of the video was just joking, as Kickball Katy noted, she loves yoga, despite her wisecrack.
When interviewer Malia James asked whether the band deliberately shouldn't have apologized, Katy again noted that "hating normal people is not a cause we believe in passionately." I can hear the Hipster Runoff guy in my head right now: "how un-alt!"
Cassie Ramone points out that one random interview from a year ago has given them so much trouble over the past year. Those who follow sports know that Derek Jeter has become legendary for being famous by saying nothing controversial in interviews. But then again, indie bands from Brooklyn are not exactly the New York Yankees.
So, uh, apologies Vivian Girls. Being snarky about bands with humble desires was a very 2008 thing to do. [Dirty Laundry]

I was actually more bothered by the interview they did where they complained people kept asking them about being female. I think when you put the word "girls" in your band name, you leave yourself open to that line of questioning.
