Apropos of the mono/stereo remaster of Pink Floyd's classic debut Piper at the Gates of Dawn released by Capitol last week, here's a promotional video of the Pink Floyd ("the" preceded the band's name back in their UFO Club days) and its Piper-era single "See Emily Play." Whatever your take on the arena-rock monster that Floyd eventually became, its early days led by genius/LSD casualty Syd Barret produced arguably the richest, most inventive music of the psychedelic period. Piper's acid-trip-as-child's-play is both demented and whimsically carefree, and "Emily" showcases the deceptively childlike nature of Barret's talents, the edges of its sing-along shadowed in dark organ echoes and freaky guitar din. I'm not sure where this actually aired, but I imagine to a family in 1967 sitting tube-wise, TV dinner in hand, hearing this trembling out of the box would be some sorta hellish jolt.

Ahhhh happy drool ahhh love Syd ahhh. Also, this would make an excellent anti-drug commercial.
