Realizing that Wrigley's Juicy Fruit is the most titillating of the chewing gums was Mtume's greatest lyrical conceit; the accompanying video for the song "Juicy Fruit" is dripping with sex and hair grease. I imagine it being a primary inspiration for the Soul Glo faux-mercial from Eddie Murphy's Coming to America, or maybe a few Chappelle Show sketches. The song topped the R&B singles chart in 1983, and in the '90s the Notorious B.I.G. realized the potential of its killer beat/hook and turned it into his classic tough but vulnerable single "Juicy." Oh, and singer James Mtume was Miles Davis' percussionist in the '70s.
