I was thrown for a loop a few months ago when the reviews for The Decemberists' new album The Crane Wife began to pour in. As you may recall, I wasn't terribly impressed with the album, but as it turns out, I was in the supreme minority (yes, you have to scroll down to the very end of the list to see our review.) I haven't wavered from my position in the month-plus since the album's release, but I did feel a little sheepish at being the odd-critic out. Thankfully, I'm no longer alone, as The Village Voice's Chris Ott hates The Decemberists more than I do. Check this barb: "This guy couldn't wait for success to validate his ego, powering half a decade of dilettante dalliances spanning Civil War period costume, Japanese folk tales, Irish solidarity poses, and his recent declaration that The Decemberists are "a wartime band." Right, Colin, America's iPods are burning." Thank you Chris, I feel much better now.
One day people are not going to understand the Wes Anderson/Rushmore allusion and music critics will be hard pressed to find a new cool way to insult artists for being pretentious.

Michael: they'll say that the artist sounds like a Pitchfork article. Of course, in the year 2150, Pitchfork articles will be written by robots.
