With an album as cinematic as Midlake's The Trials of Van Occupanther, making videos for the songs takes away some of the fun. It's similar to how people complained when they first heard movies were going to be made out of the Harry Potter books, because those visuals would do away with the elaborate scenes kids thought up in their heads as they read the novels. And we're all imaginative kids at heart, aren't we? This video is a bit too urban in setting, with a rather ugly, shirtless giant (who ends up actually being a good guy with a lunar fetish) traipsing through London and New York. The album and its protagonist definitely give off more of a rural feel. But besides that, the clip does have its lo-fi, paper cut-out charms. Keep an eye out for cameos from Hitler, Lincoln, and what looks to be Cary Grant with a very silly mustache. As for the song, I love the garbly keyboard solo more every time I hear it. How absolutely proggy!
