VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs

Last week, the top five of VH1’s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs was released by Miss Info, now Stereogum’s got the full list. Despite my hopes, Midnight Marauders and Paul’s Boutique aren’t included in full.

Most of the list makes sense (basically one song per major hip-hop artist of the last 30 years), but there are a bunch of headscratchers. N.E.R.D. on a greatest ever list? “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” not even cracking the Top 50? “The Humpty Dance” at 29 and “U Can’t Touch This” at 26? That and Tupac doesn’t even hit the Top Ten.

But putting “In Da Club” (number 18) on the list is pretty unforgivable—when was the last time you heard that song and didn’t want to punch the person who played it in the face? 2004? Granted, it’s 50’s biggest song, but there’s no way it tops anything by Afrika Bambaataa, De La Soul, or Nas (which it does here). Overall, there’s way too many new songs.

The show premieres tonight and all this week at 10 p.m. EST, and here’s the full list:

nas doesn't hit until 48? forget this thing

September 29, 2008 at 3:59 p.m.

HAHAHAHA!!

The Block is Hot?! Are you freakin' kidding me? Do they have hip hop fans making the list or pop music fans who happen to like some hip hop?

BTW: Nothing wrong with pop fans, but generalists tend to eff up lists when the focus is on a specific thing. It's like Entertainment Magazine creating a greatest Norweigan Black Metal songs list

September 29, 2008 at 4:32 p.m.

yeah seriously... Rollin with Kid N Play?... this shît is a tad embarrassing.

September 29, 2008 at 6:06 p.m.

I think the last being terrible has a lot to do with it being a poll on VH1.com-- it's not like the most knowledgable hip-hop fans are on there voting.

September 29, 2008 at 6:12 p.m.

Yeah, though it's not pure hip hop, I find it amusing they'd include a Roots song but not "The Seed (2.0)"

No "Gangster's Paradise", either. At least they didn't include "Come with Me"

September 29, 2008 at 6:13 p.m.

Gangster's Paradise is on there Ethan.

September 29, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.

I did not see it. Awareness -1

September 29, 2008 at 6:33 p.m.

I think "In Da Club" is top 20 material, maybe even top 10. I think "Gangsta's Paradise" should not be in the top 100 though.

In generally it's just a jumbled/confused list.

September 30, 2008 at 9:55 a.m.

Let me know when you find the "Real" Top 100. How could you not include KRS and Spoonie Gee! Big Mistake!

September 30, 2008 at 4:44 p.m.

Lol, this list is terrible...golddigger is literally one of Kanye's three worst songs. T.R.O.Y. at #90? What you know ahead of I Used To Love H.E.R.? Ok, this list is like saying Fall Out Boy is better than The Beatles. Why is it acceptable for the media to not understand hip hop, but not do this with any other genre? HORRIBLE

September 30, 2008 at 4:45 p.m.

Where is "93 til Infinity?"

October 1, 2008 at 10:29 a.m.

Some of these song don't need to be on here. Like Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye, and 50 cent dont deserve to be with these legends because they havent reached that status yet. IDK how lil wayne got on here. He used to be Garbage and still is. He has the most annoying voice in hip hop today. He cant even come up with his own lyrics... he has to get them from the legends like 2pac.

October 1, 2008 at 12:27 p.m.

This BS as usual. But atleast they did include the Bone Thugs Boys. Cuz they never get their props. They had more hits that should of made this list. BTnH for Life!!

October 2, 2008 at 1:20 a.m.

wtf!!!!!!! what do they base their list on? first of all, LL has two songs on here. i mean i love LL but his songs dont deserve to be on the list. Also lil jon, MC Hammer, kidnplay, sir mix alot dont deserve to be in 1000 greatest hip hop songs. one love by nas aint even the best song by nas. mind playin tricks on me should be in top 10. Dre cant rap. rappers delight and the message should be on there to show respect but not in top 10 and rakim needs to get up there in top 10 too. run dmc??? what bout brooklyn's finest? what bout the world is your? what bout shook ones part II? damn mobb deep aint even on the list. wow! man why didnt they just put vanilla ice at number 1 if they were going to do a list like this.

October 2, 2008 at 1:20 a.m.

Where is 2pac???????????????????????????

October 2, 2008 at 10:42 a.m.

How did

October 2, 2008 at 1:39 p.m.

#23 B.O.B. instead of Playa's Ball?!!! Hummmmm

October 2, 2008 at 4:39 p.m.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who disagrees with this BS list. T.R.O.Y. at #90 did it for me as well.

October 2, 2008 at 11:07 p.m.

what is the deal of this list?? 2 pac has only one song? and is not in the top 5?? and what is that that lil wayne song?? worst list ever..thats for sure ^^^^^^^

October 3, 2008 at 8:35 p.m.

October 4, 2008 at 4:12 p.m.

"Passin Me By" on the list. insane.

October 5, 2008 at 2:57 a.m.

Where the hell is summer tiime by FPAJJ??????????????

October 5, 2008 at 3:38 p.m.

No Main Source, Lords of the Underground, Poor Riteghous Teachers, Brand Dubian, Das Efx, Mobb Deep, Onyx, Redman, Raekwon, Keith Murray? This list a piece of crap.

October 5, 2008 at 3:38 p.m.

i couldn't believe T.R.O.Y. rank so low, 2pac dear mama is not on here either, salt & pepa in the top 10?!?! that's over common's I used to love h.e.r.?!?! only one jay-z, 2pac, nas, biggie and 50 cent song?!?! where's ether, one mic, takeover, where I'm from, one more chance, i get money, back down and many men. I don't know who did this list but it's 75% GARBAGE!! (Nelly hot in herre over T.R.O.Y. & Wanksta?!?!?!) But must of just did radio top ten singles.

October 5, 2008 at 3:38 p.m.

i do agree this list is kind of wack
but you got to give props to alot of these people
because if it wasnt for this list
alot of them wouldnt be known

October 5, 2008 at 11:09 p.m.

straight out bs. no way this is the 100 greatest hip hop songs.

October 5, 2008 at 11:09 p.m.

NaS being 48 is ridiculous. There's a lot of things wrong with this list but that might be the most upsetting. He's a legend, and they have Young MC ahead of him. So weak. And why One Love? Thats not even the best song on that album. I would like to see 'I'll be Dat!' by Redman on this list and 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya' by ODB. Wu Tang.

October 6, 2008 at 9:06 p.m.

Only 1 2pac song and at #14?
Children's story #61?
What about E-40, Mac Dre, Too $hort? bay area rappers completely shut out. At least one other cash money song should have made it as well. No Mos Def or Talib Kweli other than Black Star what about Get By? good try VH1!

October 7, 2008 at 12:08 a.m.

Yeah lol @ Salt & Pepper in the top 10

October 7, 2008 at 4:08 p.m.

corny southern rappers

October 7, 2008 at 4:08 p.m.

First of all Nasty Nas should be top 5,second what is Lil wayne and Master P doin on there?they are garbage might as well put on lame ass vanilla ice.No Southern rappers should even be on the greatest 200 hip-hop song list.Because of corny southern hip-pop,REAL Hip-hop is DEAD.There is NeVer goin to be hip-hop like the 80's to late 90's.What the fuk is cypress hill,Three 6 Mafia,Lil Jon,Chamillionaire doin on the list.Worst list, who was the fuking moron who made the list.COME ON

October 7, 2008 at 11:20 p.m.

yeh because tupac's best song was i get around sure yeh because your not retarded are you i meen FFS what about changes, unborn child, brenda's gotta baby, part time mutha you could have said any of them because they were his biggest hits but no you put him 8th with i get around nothing against the song just your judgement on pac he was a legend and the a pioneer of hip hop so learn a thing or 2 about real hip hop , rnb , rap before you make a very stupid wrong list of song thanks ...

October 13, 2008 at 2:22 a.m.

Where can I find a real list? at least they made one?

October 13, 2008 at 1:09 p.m.

ODB's Shimmy Shimmy Ya did make the list. And you have to think about it, most people who watch vh1 have dealt with large doses of ignorant love shows and are clearly suffering from some form of mental retardation.

And don't knock all southern rappers, Outkast and Geto Boys are dope. I listen to Mind Playin' Tricks On Me at least 3 times everyday to this day.

October 14, 2008 at 12:08 a.m.

Maybe I need to get my eyes checked cuz I must be going blind. I'm having a hard time locating Mobb Deep somewhere on that list. One of atleast four songs should have made the list ("Shook One Pt.2", "Survival of The Fittest", "Quiet Storm", or even Prodigy's "Keep It Thoro") I see Nas, although I love "One Love" I feel like he has other "top hip hop song" material ("It aint hard to tell", "If I Ruled The World" even "Hate Me Now" and uuuhhh a song called "Ether") Those are just a few. What happened to The Roots "Don't Say Nuthin" or "You Got Me" Raekwon's "Live From NY" Ghostface's "All That I got Is You" or "Apollo Kids". I'm not even gonna mention all of the missing 2pac songs. I mean this is wack and almost a disgrace to the world of "real" Hip Hop.
However, I did watch the show and one thing that I realized was that each song had a video, many great hip hop songs that deserved to be on this list don't even have videos. Maybe they should redo this like they do those "I Love The...(90's)" and have them broken down in 5 or 10 year time frames or just get a more accurate way of calculating.

October 15, 2008 at 4:02 p.m.

no kool g rap songs at all on dis list or big daddy kane but they have lil wayne and t.i?!?! disgrace ''on the run by g rap is easily top 10,and ''mind playn tricks on me'' by the geto boys definetly desevers a spot here,t.r.o.y number 90?!?!?! imo dats a top 5 and maybe number 1!! also the world is yours by nas and it was a good day by ice cube shud be any hip hop fans top 100 list!!

October 17, 2008 at 1:49 a.m.

October 18, 2008 at 8:11 p.m.

WTF wheres 2Pac ? Those stupid bitches at vh1 should stick to what thet f*%kin know Rock and sh!t cuz they f*@ked up the hip hop list. I am officially upset.

November 10, 2008 at 3:22 p.m.

People calm down! Vh1 does this kind of thing ALL the time. They have tons of screwed up top 100 lists (One Hit Wonders, 70s, 80s). It's voted on by fans. Fans of Vh1. A very middle of the road sorta older group. I mean who really watches Vh1 anyway? Think of their demographics. They can't help it.

If you want a more urban list you would need to look elsewhere.

November 13, 2008 at 2:35 p.m.

VH1 should be ashamed...

November 15, 2008 at 9:19 p.m.

nothing by Gang Starr?--Erik B. and Rakim, once? anybody ever heard Follow the Leader & Microphone Fiend? plus a bunch of crossover garbage and stuff for 16 yr old white girls...when KRS-One,Kool Moe Dee, Chuck D etc were on the set that was hip-hop and what they're doing now aint nothin but a shame
lampin old school...danny Oh

November 15, 2008 at 9:19 p.m.

u have dmx ruff ryder anthem 79 and nelly's hot in herre 36! are F*ckin kidding me?

November 15, 2008 at 9:19 p.m.

Does anybody know wher ice ice baby and loose your self is on this list?????????????????

November 15, 2008 at 11:13 p.m.

It was a horrible list. I only caught bits and pieces and I had to change the channel when "T.R.O.Y" came in at 90 (travesty right there), and was immediately followed by Cam'Ron "Oh Boy" at #89.

I'd bet many of the most credible MCs over the age 30+ have "T.R.O.Y" in their own personal top 10. And just about every top producer can't talk enough about how incredible the beat is on that song. That's easily top 5 material on a legitimate list of best hip-hop songs (if I made my own list it would be #1)

Tupac songs that had the flashiest music videos made the list instead of his best songs.

Not a single Preemo-helmed song on the list as far as I can tell by a quick glance. And that's a shame, because that man has contributed quite a bit to the Hip-Hop Honors shows. And the fact that he doesn't even get recognition on this list is pathetic. He has helmed so many classics.

I'm sure they did a piss-poor job representing "regional hip-hop" like from Atlanta, Houston, Memphis and Oakland too. But I don't know enough about hip-hop from those places to comment on that.

Not going to complain about P.E. at #1, but to me it seemed like just picked "Fight the Power" to appease the Golden Age/purist hip-hop fans out there.

There are just some straight up BAD songs on this list too.

I could keep on complaining too but it's futile. The producers know that these countdowns spark debate, but they don't have any intention of making any changes.

November 15, 2008 at 11:27 p.m.

WHERE THE HELL IS DEAR MAMA, LIFE's A B*TCH, DEAD PRESIDENTS 2, SHOOK ONES PT 2, MS JACKSON, THE LIGHT, GET BY, MATHEMATICS, OR BRING THE NOISE??????????? this list is some whack sh*t

November 16, 2008 at 4:36 p.m.

Where is Lauryn Hill's Doo Wop (That Thing), her song went to #1 on Hot Billboard 100, and she still didn't get a recognition in this list, The Fugees belonged here which they are with Killing Me Softly, but she needs to be recognized as the MC that she is.

November 16, 2008 at 5:07 p.m.

i think that ignorant s*** by jay-z should be on there because half the people in here posting are ignorant s***s.. if your gonna say stuff like no big daddy kane and no geto boys lol check to make sure that there not on the list cause there on the damn list..

with that being said this is a s***y list for true hip hop fans but lets face it if we were to make a list of 100 best songs there would be 12 form pac 8 from biggie 5 or 6 form eminem dre and snoop would be well represented ice cube and wu tang clan would have a bunch on there BIG L would be on there at least 3 or 4 times Big Pun would have more then 1 song NWA would be on there a few more times jigga would have 4 or 5 songs.. do you see my point? There would be 10 or 15 rappers making up the top 100 and that wouldnt be good tv so im guessing vh1 tried to represent all big names atleast once with there most main stream song..
My problems with the list are as follows 2pac should have had dear mama and changes in there biggie need at least one more either mo money mo problems or warning BIG L should have been in the top 10 with put it on and probably in the top 20 with either ebonics or mvp..
my top 10 is
10. Str8 outta compton- NWA
9. Shook ones - Mobb Deep
8. Put It on- Big L
7. When I B On the Mic- Rakim
6. Hard Knock Life- Jay-Z
5. Changes- 2pac
4. Juicy
3. With Out Me- Eminem
2. It Was a Good Day
1. Nuttin But A G Thang- Dr Dre

November 19, 2008 at 10:22 a.m.

VH1 had no buisness at all making a top 100 hip hop list. They barely cater to hip hop fans in their regular programing! And if Wayne is going to be on the list why "Tha Block Is Hot"?. And only one song each from pac and big eachm, C'MON MAN!

November 19, 2008 at 5:35 p.m.

What dip sh it made up this list? Vhs needs to monitor who makes these lists up a little better.

November 19, 2008 at 7:47 p.m.

I believe the top 10 was pretty good.
But Wayne did not need to be as far up as he is
GET LOW SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN MADE THE LIST!!! THERE ARE MUCH BETTER SONGS OUT THERE!!
not knocking Jon and the ESB. just saying.
and Kanye shouldn't have been as far up either. hell to the no. that should've been in Jon's spot. or off the whole list. absolutely not his best song at all. if he HAD to be on this list, "Diamonds" would've been better. or "Through the Wire"
And Chamillionaire? Sorry but...no.
Tupac and Biggie definitely need more props on this list. Most definitely.
Speaking of which, some Mos Def wouldn't hurt. at least they got Black Star "Definition". Not a bad song at all.
Not the greatest list though.

November 20, 2008 at 11:12 p.m.

I have to admit, the list is wack. You just have to remember that this is one list out of millions. Every single person is going to have their own opinion of what the best hip hop songs should be. I do agree that lil john,50,lil wayne, and T.I. should not have been on the list. The rest were ok but not at the right spot or with the right song. And "daba", you wack too. How can you say that "In da club" is top 10 material while "Gangsta's Paradise" is not. You probably one of the people that voted on the VH1 list.

November 21, 2008 at 5:03 p.m.

everyone is gonna have their own opinion. but this list is soooo whack. used to lover HER is way to low. and boogie down productions only has one song. My philosophy isnt even their best song. i dont even like rapper delight....

November 28, 2008 at 12:27 a.m.

Everyone will have a different opinion of who should be on the list. It doesn't matter who made the list, either BET, MTV, Fuse, somebody will be unhappy wit the list.

Plus, it also said for viewers to vote, watchers of it, or non watchers who just happened to stroll past the channel. They let viewers choose it. They did not just decide to randomly throw in songs. But as my sister said, "If you didn't go into the website and vote, voice opinion on who should go there, what shouldn't go there, then you don't have jack sh*t to say. "

Maybe the songs that were voted were liked more than the songs or artists you people typed, wrote, or listed. Maybe they sold more records than the songs you people are putting in

December 1, 2008 at 6:16 p.m.

tupac should be on here with at least two more song
dear mama
and changes
and if not at least set the ONLY song he has on here higher
i mean really he was one of the best rappers of all time
and he stil is

December 3, 2008 at 11:57 p.m.

December 8, 2008 at 8:01 p.m.

1 2pac 1 biggie come on thats just trieble wheres changes getto gosple or big poppa...and no MO MONEY MO PROBLES what is this

December 8, 2008 at 8:05 p.m.

are you kidding only 1 2pac song only 1 biggie song and only one CRAPPY lil wayne song i can name 40 songs by lil wayne taht is better.... and no MO MONEY MO PROBLEMS, no Getto gospelle no changes....what is going on with this list

Wow. I agree with the top ten except for the #1 song... It's a great song, but there isn't enough verses in it, it's mostly just beats and noises. Good though, maybe should be in the 9 spot. "Paid in Full" should be top 10.
These are aall the songs that shouldn't be here, in order.

99 Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz ft/ Ying Yang Twins: Get Low
94 Master P ft. Sikk, Fiend, Mia-x and Mystical: Make 'Em Say Ugh
89 Cam'ron: Oh Boy
83 2 Live Crew: Me So Horny
80 Three 6 Mafia ft. Paula Campbell- Hard Out Here For A Pimp
79 DMX: Ruff Ryders' Anthem (Stop Drop)
74 EPMD: You Gots To Chill
72 J.J. Fad: Supersonic
70 3(rd) Bass: Pop Goes the Weasel
68 T.I.: What You Know
63 Kid 'n Play: Rollin' With Kid N Play
56 Busta Rhymes: Woo-Ha! Got You All In Check
50 Lil' Wayne: Tha Block Is Hot
43 Game, The ft. 50 Cent: Hate It or Love It
29 Digital Underground: The Humpty Dance
25 Fugees: Killing Me Softly
20 Kanye West ft/ Jamie Foxx: Gold Digger
18 50 Cent: In Da Club
17 Sir Mix-A-Lot: Baby Got Back
15 Eminem: Stan

December 10, 2008 at 1:12 p.m.

December 16, 2008 at 2:15 p.m.

Thought

December 18, 2008 at 11:48 p.m.

ok. the POINT of this list is to show OTHERS wat the ppl who voted (who could have been anybody. i could have done it) thought the top 100 songs were. it was who WE thought were good. not the media. no criteria, no watever, just if we like it, hate it, or love it, or watever. u gotta understand that.

December 19, 2008 at 8:53 a.m.

First off... I'm just as upset, if not more upset than any of you, but I realize who made this list and who voted for it... VH1.
VH1 is a f*cking tabloid. I repeat VH1 IS A F*CKING TABLOID!!!!
You can't expect the type of person to pick up cosmo or esquire to know a goddamn thing about hip hop. Oh an btw wtf is up with so many people loving Juicy? That song sucks. My retarted second cousin can come up with better rhymes than the sh*t on that song. NOTORIOUS BIG IS OVERRATED.

December 22, 2008 at 5:29 p.m.

HOW IS RUN DMC - IT'S TRICKY NOT ON HERE!

December 22, 2008 at 7:48 p.m.

@Fredward40 hands - You're crazy if you think Juicy sucks. The rhymes are sick. Its relevant, legit, can bump it, actually says something, its the total package. I actually think its top 3 material if not number one. As far as the list, it is pretty bad. Nas-One Mic deserves a spot. Jay-Z f/ Eminem - Renegade deserves a high spot. Talib Kweli- Beautiful Struggle, Mos Def- Ms Fat Booty, or Mathematics, A Tribe Called Quest - Bonita Applebum need to be on here. There's a lot that don't deserve placement on this list, and many that are more than qualified to replace them.

December 23, 2008 at 10:18 p.m.

T.R.O.Y at #90!?!? Thats top 5 material. Here is the people I think should be removed from this list Lil Jon,Lil Wayne,L'Trimm,Chamillionaire,Three 6 Mafia,50 Cent,Nelly,Fat Joe and any other Artist/Song that came out after 2000.
Btw:The ten tracks on Illmatic are way better than VH1's top ten.

December 23, 2008 at 10:18 p.m.

How can you have shes a gold digger above Bone Thugs n harmony Crossroads? Are you serious? In da club ahead and crossroads? Cross Roads Is a top 20 song, maybe top 10. Songs like in da club and gold digger should be 80th or above. I couldn't tell you the last time someone put on party in da club, and if they did, they would defiantly get made fun of.

December 24, 2008 at 9:53 a.m.

Some one said cypress hill should not be on the list are u crazy

Cypress hill are legends in hip hop
they invented song to get high two

December 24, 2008 at 9:53 a.m.

3(rd) Bass: Pop Goes the Weasel

Dis is also a good song for the person that said it sould not be on the list
just listen to it
MC serch i a master at the rap game

December 24, 2008 at 10:28 a.m.

Wow...once again the "experts" got it all wrong. This is more like a list of "What videos do we have laying around labeled hip hop???" then an honest list. So many forgotten.......Diamond D, Big L even Skillz....I mean go classic but contemporary too. Wheres Immortal Technique????? And Hype, to go off of what you're saying Fat Joe was lacing tracks like "Flow Joe" back in the 90's...hate him or love him he's an icon in the industry. Even if he only puts out one good single every three years. lol To the powers that be at Prefix....Let's assemble a summit and devise a top 100 list for hip hop please.....lets educate these youngsters on the true facets of hip hop. Oh, and one last thing.....where the f@ck is Camp Lo on that list????? "Luchini"....man, a classic. One.

December 27, 2008 at 6:02 p.m.

This List is Bullsh*t!
It should be like this:
1: The Loyalists - Loyal Theory
2: Immortal Technique - Peruvian Cocaine
3: Army of the Pharaohs - Swords Drawn
4: The Lost Children Of Babylon - Revolutionary
5: GZA & RZA - Liquid Swords

December 28, 2008 at 2:04 p.m.

January 14, 2009 at 11:39 p.m.

They should dig a whole and put this list in it!
I love classic hip hop and I didn't see nice & smooth, gangstarr, redman etc The old school artist that did make the list was for some of their worst songs Most of you said pretty much everything I would have Electric relaxation should be in the top 5 at least, Apollo Kids in the to 10 at least or should this list be called the 100 most commercialized hip hop song list in that cas where is Oaktown 357, Vanilla Ice and more MC Hammer? We all might try denying that we liked these songs but for all old school fans this was our version of what is now the soulja boy era except they could dance and make sense during rhyme delivery

January 15, 2009 at 5:48 p.m.

You are all nit picking over individual artists and songs and missing the big picture. The whole list is garbage.

March 1, 2009 at 3:43 p.m.

i agree tupac should be wayyy up on the list. but yall hatin on lil wayne.. he is a hip-hop genius. when he is retired he will be all over the list.

March 1, 2009 at 4:57 p.m.

lil wayne was ok before all the bull he's been doing, once he started to get fancy, it was game over for him. sure he has punchlines and a good flow, but u could never ever put him up there with the greats never

March 18, 2009 at 3:58 p.m.

There are some great joints on here, but overall I do not like this list. Were they trying to put together a list of 100 artists/groups in hip hop? This is a week attempt to stir a discussion. Not wasting my time.

March 21, 2009 at 2:52 p.m.

wheres eazy e? I get around is not as good as other tupac songs. lil wayne block is hot should be on the list but not as high nas should deffinitly ranked better than jay z and lil jon is a disgrace. vh1 is telling me that if i just yell random patethic verses in the mic and act like a crackhead all the time i can be in the top 100. wow cmon. and stan is not even ems best song and neither is the song they put for the beastie boys

March 27, 2009 at 12:14 p.m.

this is wack up . u hear me mangs

March 31, 2009 at 7:46 p.m.

April 17, 2009 at 2:17 a.m.

didnt people vote on this?

April 19, 2009 at 2:41 p.m.

uh Crazy Baby i think the song your looking for is They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) by Pete Rock & CL Smooth.

April 21, 2009 at 8:03 p.m.

No Pharcyde? They dont know sh*t.

April 25, 2009 at 12:19 p.m.

I have yet to see where anyone mentioned "Murder Was the Case"... that entire album was hot...but especially

"Murder Was the Case" - Snoop
"Natural Born Killaz" - Dr. Dre & Ice Cube
"21 Jump Street" - Snoop

I have no argument with PE being #1 or SHG being #2... do disagree with 2-pac not being there...

and...

Nobody here will want to include it, but keep in mind that the idiotic "Ice, Ice, Baby" was the first Hip-Hop Track to hit #1 on the pop chart...that should have at least gotten Van Winkle a nod at #100...

Typical Vh1 list...some good...lot of terrible

May 4, 2009 at 2:57 p.m.

who shot ya? should be no.1. on everybody's list.

May 6, 2009 at 10:54 a.m.

what i hate the most about this list is gold digger!!one of the best hip hop songs???what the f***??how did that happen???

May 10, 2009 at 9:58 p.m.

What about KRS-One?
DasEFX?
Rakim?

May 22, 2009 at 5:19 p.m.

were is ice cube-gangsta rap made me do it ?
were is dr dre-still dre ?
were is eminem-lose yourself ?
this list is a peace of crap

p.s-Lil' Wayne is a comercial rapper

May 23, 2009 at 10:12 p.m.

I can't believe there was no Gang Starr! This list was a joke for the most part... Here's my take on it:

http://debonairdebacles.wordpress.com/2008/10/20/vh1s-100-greatest-hip-hop-songs/

May 25, 2009 at 11:42 a.m.

This list is bull mierda I wish some one wouldve dug underground and got some of that plus Cypress Hill has made much better songs than insane in the brain sure that's their beat known song but definately not thier best.

June 2, 2009 at 1:11 p.m.

in da club should be number 1. same with hot in here

June 11, 2009 at 2:22 a.m.

I only found a few problems with this list - and trust me I love hip hop. First off, I think the list is great because it reflects people's opinions of the greatest hip hop songs. Personally, I think 50 belongs somewhere on the list but definitely not in the top 20 maybe top 50 at the most. Secondly, I think that Stan is one of Eminem's worst songs. A better fit in my opinion would be Lose Yourself since that was featured at number 4 (I believe) on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs over the Past 25 Years. The Top Twenty is almost perfect except the song that made Missy Elliot famous is The Rain and that would be a better fit than Get Ur Freak despite that being a great song. I personally would put The Message at Number One since that was one of the first hip hop songs to have a social motif to it despite it being so awesome. I myself don't understand why Nas wasn't in the Top 20 instead of 50 cent. I think that MC Hammer shouldn't really be on this list either just because I think his songs are pretty rediculous (just a personal thought). Lil Wayne aint bad but definitely top 50 material. Common should be higher up on the list because I Used to Love H.E.R. is a classic. And for A Tribe Called Quest I would've chosen Electric Relaxation since that is seemingly their most known song. I would've liked to see Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check up higher since Busta is one of my favorite rappers. And that's about all I have to say about that list.

June 14, 2009 at 3 p.m.

I think that more people need to know about Lupe Fiasco. He has some awesome songs, such as Daydreamin', Kick Push, and Superstar. And why no Talib Kweli? Ok... TROY at 90? Wow. Thanks media or screwing people's minds over.

June 14, 2009 at 3:04 p.m.

u people need to realize that this list was based on peoples votes. If you didnt go to vh1.com and vote then too damn bad. Its not based on facts. If it were you would see like 50 Tupac songs on there since we all know that he's the best rapper who ever lived.

June 20, 2009 at 5:39 p.m.

A white guy most definitely made this list... this is like "Now! Music Vol. 25 Best Of All Time." Truly Appalling to any true hip hop fan. Chamallionaire is actually top 10,000,000? Truly idiotic. No time or effort or straight interest put into it. God I hate mainstream media. All the money put into these employees and can't even make a justifiable list. Truly pathetic.

June 21, 2009 at 2:04 p.m.

"I get around" Tupacs best song???F*CK OUTTA HERE..."Do 4 love,I aint mad atcha,Hail Mary"EtcEtc are way Better..Whoever made this list needs to be slapped by a hiphop purists dick!

June 22, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.

What the f*ck.......where's Rakim, Biggie, Big L. You can't make a list without 'em.

June 29, 2009 at 8:56 a.m.

if you know hip hop today then you know that hip hop to vh1 is comprised of artists, in tha sense that these cats push an image. back in tha day this image uesd2 be a portrail of the artists life as he viewd it. nas states hip hop is dead. nas is poetic, hip hop hence went underground.. to find and undrstand what hip hop was and is about, only the underground market will provide this for you, lil wayne is not hip hop, as he claims, he was born into wealth.. yes he acquired his own wealth in his credit through his body of work, its not his fault he has become popular, its mass society, popular beat music is what i dubb commercial hip hop.. tsk tsk tsk vh1 maybe next year

July 3, 2009 at 1:39 p.m.

my top 5 5. notorious b.i.g-juicy 4. 2pac- i get around 3. ice cube- it was a good day 2. dr.dre- notin but A G thang 1.- eminem lose yourself

Pharoah Monch's Simon Says not on it
Busta Rhymes' Break Your Neck not on it
Ludacris's She's A Hoe not on it

50 cent's In Da Club only at 18? Eminem, 50, Bone thugs and DMX NEED to be on there more. And no Tech N9ne? Fu-ck This list.

August 20, 2009 at 12:56 p.m.

nas halftime should've been # 1

September 14, 2009 at 5:35 p.m.

some of these songs were good but there were plenty they couldve removed and replaced with others. im not too big on hip hop although i do like it but i can say no doubt tht hip hop is dying and fairly quickly

September 26, 2009 at 4:05 p.m.

M.C Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" should be replaced by Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz's "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)", because that is the greatest one hit wonder hip hop song ever. I also think there should be two more Busta Rhymes songs ("Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See " & "Gimme Some More"). Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "They Reminice Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" should be top ten at least. LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" is also better than "I Need Love". KRS-One's "Sound Of Da Police" should be on there. Nas's "The World Is Yours" is better than "One Love". Scarface's - Smile should also be there. Basically I can go on all day on whats wrong with this list.

October 3, 2009 at 11:40 a.m.

This list is joke.the only things they seem to get right is Public Enemy at number 1. wtf.

October 7, 2009 at 9:43 a.m.

they DEFINITLY should have some big L thrown in there
and immortal technique is deserving too but he's underground so that doesn't surprise me

October 11, 2009 at 11:54 a.m.

Big L, technique, Wiley, more Nas, more Biggie and some Jurassic 5 and more A Tribe Called Quest shpuld all be in there. I mean how can 'can i cick it?', 'machine gun funk', 'red hot' and 'mvp' not be in there.

October 12, 2009 at 2:53 p.m.

PE deserved 1# I do however object to the TUPAC song chosen he had much better material that could had been used.I think jazzy jeff & the fresh prince should had been higher on the list they help make hip hop diverse as far as style's go.other great hip hop artist who should have made the list include brand nubian,Xclan,yz,the lost boy's,dead prez, the coup,RASKASS,however I understand that some people might be offended.

WHY isn't 2Pac in the 1st place??? And WHY the song listed there isn't one of his best??? (I mean, it's good, but not the BEST), and WHY WHY WHY WHY Bone Thugs N Harmony is in #32??? This list was made by someone who knows SH*T about music. I'm not black, but hell, I know better! (I'm latino), Cypress Hill #34???? COME ON! They should be above many of the ones who were closer to the 1st place. I can't believe that list, honestly. The 2Pac part is the most annoying, seriously, no person with a freaking brain would ignore him and his best material! Number 14 is INSULTING! They were unfair to many other rappers that deserved better places in that list, but I guess the ones that stand out of that list are the godfathers of rap that were given LOUSY PLACES AND WAY UNDERRATED!
