Vevo Officially Launches in December

Vevo, the new video-based music service operated by YouTube-owner Google, has set an official launch date for December 8. Vevo was created initially by the Universal Music Group as a premium version of YouTube, where the major label's entire video catalog would be available online. YouTube, AOL and other websites that wanted to use the video would have to go through Vevo. In June, Sony Music joined in on the venture.

There were also reports that A2IM, a group that represents over 200 independent labels joined with Vevo. A2IM confirmed that they were in talks with Vevo, but as of posting there was no confirmation about A2IM's official involvement. Fellow major label EMI, meanwhile, has joined with Hulu to provide similar services to fans.

With only Universal and Sony as partners, it is hard to believe that Vevo would make a huge impact on the online community. Without content from other labels, it is unlikely that there would be enough content to keep users coming back on a consistent basis. With the launch now so close at hand, it will be interesting to see how this service will work. [The Daily Swarm]
