Ashcroft sees a heavy, groove-oriented Verve album on horizon

Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft recently told XFM that the reunited band are leaning toward the groovier side of their music as they continue to record new material for an album they hope to finish in the new year, according to Gigwise. "I think we wanna revisit some of our heavier groove stuff and take that somewhere else you know."

Ashcroft also says they hope to headline Glastonbury next year, and tops it off with some of Cool Britannia-era pomposity: "I think it would be a travesty if we didn'''t...Because I think what'''s missing from a lot of the headliners is we'''re one of the few bands that can jam without sounding like Lynyrd Skynyrd on a bad night, so we can actually take people on a proper journey, rock n roll wise."
Unfortunatley, XFM didn't grill him Tim Russert-style about comments he made to the radio station just a scant four years ago when he vowed that Verve would never reunite: "No, I can't ever see a Verve reunion...I've never done things like anyone else does them, and that's what everybody does--they get a reunion together--and I've got no desire to do that purely because it would just be a financial venture...It wouldn't be because I felt there was unfinished business musically. That was our time, that was our moment, and it's gone." So much for not being like everyone else. Is there anything in this statement that they are not doing right now?

Can't wait to hear the new songs - sounds closer to their early stuff than the later years (which I didn't care for nearly as much). Where are the U.S. dates??? Hopefully they're waiting to unveil the new material stateside at Coachella, with a full tour to follow ...

I love the people who claim to prefer the "old" Verve... before commercial success, etc. What a load of garbage. Funny how it now seems like people prefer the "old" stuff 10 to 1, yet the "new" stuff outsold the old by the same margin. Each Verve album was better (and sold more) than it's predecessor. That's not a coincidence.

Um ... why can I not love the old Verve stuff??? As someone who was pretty into shoegaze's heyday, A Storm in Heaven, the early EPs like All in the Mind and She's a Superstar, etc., were all a lot closer to what I liked than the folky/acoustic stuff that came out later. Even before I met/interviewed them way before all their "mainstream" success in '93, I was a big fan of the first album and its heavy/swirly jams and grooves.Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the later albums, I just was disappointed when their direction changed (and then when they broke up) and am happy to know I'll get a second helping of the stuff I've missed.

From what I have heard of the Verve's new stuff, it really sounds like the best of their old sound meets the new.
I think this is going to be a great album. I am anticipating the new release with great expectations. This really is an amazing band, and I know that they will not disappoint fans with their new album. By the way, does anyone have any new news on when this album is going to be released?
