Vampire Weekend's 'Contra' The Number One Album In The Country

Vampire Weekend's splendid sophomore album, Contra, has knocked out Ke$ha (who is the absolute worst of all this week) and Susan Boyle, claiming the top spot on the Billboard 200 album charts. The album moved 124,000 copies, which is obviously huge for a band on an indie label. Contra is only the 12th independently distributed album to hit number one since 1991. [Billboard]

I think, for better or worse, Backspacer gets counted in that 12.

The Shins hitting #2 was probably the biggest dealbreaker of the past few years.
