As Buzzfeed reports, Urban Outfitters’ chief adminstrative officer, Calvin Hollinger, has issued a statement to analysts saying that the Philadelphia-based fashion and lifestyle chain is now the world’s biggest vinyl retailer. Can’t say we saw it coming.
Primarily stocking vintage-inspired clothing and streetwear for high schoolers in major urban areas (despite the company’s target demographics of 18- to 28-year olds), Urban Outfitters carries wax in most of their 400+ locations in the US and internationally, as well as on their website. What’s interesting to note is that the company does not own its record inventory, instead acting as a middle man and offering sales through several associated vendors.
Urban Outfitters’ rise to vinyl dominance coincides with the format’s recent resurgence as the preferred physical counterpart to downloads and streams, that is the media favored by millennials — paradoxically also vinyl’s biggest buyers.
