This is far from official at present, but a recently published piece on Gorillaz masterminds Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn suggests we may not see the cartoon pop band again. The piece appeared in U.K. newspaper the People, which you can see in full via a scan at One Thirty BPM.
“Jamie became frustrated at how much time Damon was giving to his many other projects,” reads the article. “Damon, meanwhile, was less than impressed with Jamie’s party lifestyle. With relations so bad they have decided to go their separate ways.” No official sources are cited and no quotes were obtained from Albarn and Hewlett, so it’s best to take this with a pinch of salt.
“There’s been a massive argument that has basically ended things, Jamie’s gone abroad to be with his girlfriend, while Damon is busy with his opera and with the return of Blur,” the article continues. “For now it looks like it could be the end of Gorillaz.” There will certainly be a long hiatus from the band now the touring duties for Plastic Beach are over and Albarn (allegedly) focuses on the Blur reunion, so it's unlikely that these rumors will be confirmed or denied by either party in the near future.
This is a band that takes five years off between each album. I'm sure this project is far from over.
As long as Mr. Albarn does not retire from making music, this is not painful for any of the fans of this brilliant man's gift. What this article says most fans already know, he is releasing new music with blur (Yeah!!!), he is making music for another strange Opera/Soundtrack project and for possibly a completely new band and he has no time for Gorillaz. I say bring it on. The man has made brilliant music with all his projects and a little diversity is more than welcomed. If Gorillaz is dead then RIP, Damon Albarn lives on.
