As the old adage goes, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”
The bizarre and unfortunate set of circumstances that led to the cancellation of UFC 151 immediately resulted in several positives for the sport of MMA, including a stacked UFC 152 card and a chance for Alan Belcher to properly recover from a spinal fracture.
“Everyone is asking if I am mad at UFC, Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort,” Belcher said in an MMAFighting.com report. “Answer is no. This is a blessing in disguise. I have a spinal fracture.”
The UFC 152 card, which was slated to have Joseph Benevidez vs Demetrious Johnson in the main event, now has a solid main card from top-to-bottom, including a fight between Jon “Bones” Jones and Vitor Belfort in the headlining slot.
Another fight originally scheduled for UFC 151 – Kyle Noke vs Charlie Brenneman – has been moved to the UFC 152 undercard. UFC 152 takes place on Sept. 22 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Belcher was originally scheduled to fight Belfort on Oct. 13 in Rio de Janeiro, but his injury opened the possibility for the latter to take on Jones on Sept. 22.
Belcher hopes to return to action by November against Chris Weidman or another top five contender.
