Tyondai Braxton of Battles Readies Solo Album Central Market

For those heartbroken by the forecast of a long hiatus for Battles, take solace in knowing that the group’s vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Tyondai Braxton, is preparing a solo album for the techno-egghead crowd that will be ready in the fall, Pitchfork reports. The new album, Central Market, is the second solo effort for Braxton (his first was History That Has No Effect in pre-Battles 2002) and relies on the same foundation of electronics and guitar-pedal wizardry that Battles deployed on 2007’s Mirrored to the giddy joy of even those of us who can’t write computer code or juggle differential equations in our head.

For this album Braxton enlisted not only the electronics shop for assistance but also the Wordless Music Orchestra, which played the U.S. premiere of a piece by another rocker with compositional chops, Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. Braxton’s music has always been intricately and complexly structured; now you can add to that “orchestral.” This turn to the classical represents another step for Braxton as he uses computer-age technology to make music that is organic and human. Central Market comes out September 15 on Warp. [Pitchfork]
