Tyler, The Creator Didn’t Sign To Pharrell’s New Label

Update: Odd Future publicist Heathcliff Berru has informed us that the news regarding Tyler, the Creator’s signing to Pharrell Williams’ I Am Other label is fake. Apparently Tyler’s label through Sony/RED is set to launch soon. He wrote the following on his Twitter:

Why The Fuck Would I Sign With Someone Else When I Am The Fucking Boss Ceo Whatever Of My Own Shit?

Even Tho Pharrell Is The Coolest of All Fucking Time Ever To Me, I Got My Own Shit

Even though Odd Future signed a group record deal this past April, that apparently does not mean that its individual members aren’t allowed to also sign with other labels. It was announced this morning that Odd Future leader Tyler, the Creator has inked a deal with Pharrell Williams’ new label, I Am Other. Tyler is one of the label’s first three artists.

Williams issued the following statement on the signing and his label.

“They’re not getting the recognition in the mainstream media, but in the digital world they dominate – the 16-, 17-, 18-year-old virtuosos all over the world coming out of nowhere and just taking stake in their position. The Others are multifaceted, pro-active people who live outside the box and aren’t confined by categories.”

It’ll be interesting, to say the least, what this means for Tyler. Of course, prior to their group deal, he and the duo of MellowHype dropped records on XL Recordings and Fat Possum, respectively. And we’re still waiting on Def Jam to issue a proper release of Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra.
