Tyler, The Creator Shares Sunny, Jazz-Inflected New Song “Boredom” — Listen

The track comes from his forthcoming album 'Scum Fuck Flower Boy'

Late last month, Tyler, The Creator dropped two brand new songs out of nowhere: the menacing “Who Dat Boy” featuring A$AP Rocky and the sun-drenched “911 / Mr. Lonely” featuring Frank Ocean. With the two songs also came the announcement of his forthcoming new album, Scum Fuck Flower Boy. Now, Tyler, The Creator has dropped a brand new single, “Boredom,” featuring vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae, Rex Orange County, and Anna of the North.

The song opens with pitched-up jazz guitar chords, drunkenly strumming against an array of psychedelic effects. “When you’re having fun, time flies / Out the window / Find some time, find some time to do something,” sings Rex Orange County. Backing vocals repeat the hook before a flanger-effected boom bat drum beat drops and Tyler’s deep, gritty voice cuts through. He dives into the nature of his relationships and his own insecurities, rapping, “My friends suck, fuck ’em, I’m over ’em / ‘Hi y’all, y’all ain’t hit me all day / What the fuck is the problem? Is it me? / ‘Cause I’m not solved, I’m bored.'” The instrumental is incredibly sunny, surreal, and euphoric — yet, there are still undertones of sadness and confusion, especially in Tyler’s voice and lyrics.

In addition to dropping a new album soon, Tyler has teamed up with Converse to release a special edition of the classic One Star silhouette. In the promo video, Tyler burns a pair of Vans — another shoe company he previously worked with.

And if a new album and shoe deal isn’t enough, Tyler is also working on a new show called “Nuts + Bolts,” which will air on Viceland. It premieres on August 3rd; check out a preview below.

In the meantime, enjoy the sunlit new single, “Boredom.” His Cherry Bomb follow-up will drop on July 21st via Columbia. You can pre-order it here.
