After releasing his woozy album Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight last year, Travis Scott has made videos for “Goosebumps,” “Beibs in the Trap,” and “Pick Up The Phone.” Today, he has unveiled the visual counterpart to one of the album’s fiercest bangers, “Way Back.” It stars Houston Rockets player, James Harden, whose name is mentioned in the first verse of the song.
The video opens up with Harden watching several different TVs, all on different gossip and entertainment channels. The overlapping reporter voices creates a schizophrenic effect, which stays intact throughout the seven minute video. He mutes the voices and heads to an empty basketball court. An opponent appears — himself. Flashes of cheerleaders come in and out, as if Harden really is seeing things. As he begins to battle himself, the screen switches to him hanging upside down in what looks like an empty parking garage full of various characters working out and grilling. Scott is seen in the corner playing video games, while Harden starts singing the lyrics to the song, “I can’t get no rest / I fall asleep with a Tec / Stashin’ all the pills in my desk / Wearin’ every chain on my neck.” The video ends with Scott cruising in the backseat of a convertible with the top down. He looks pensive and melancholic compared to the normal hype movements we have come to expect from the Houston rapper.
Scott recently released three new songs: “A Man,” “Butterfly Effect,” and “Green & Purple.” The tracks appeared unexpectedly appeared on his SoundCloud, but fans aren’t complaining about Scott being so busy sharing new music. He also was the feature guest on a new 2 Chainz track that just dropped yesterday, “4 AM,” from Pretty Girls Like Trap Music. Additionally, he has promised that an album with Quavo is forthcoming.
At a recent show during a freestyle, he rapped, “I’ve been up late working on some tunes. Album coming soon.”
