Track Review: White Magic "Shine on Heaven"

I'm not sure what it is about White Magic's recordings that leaves me so cold. Live, their regal piano drones can be hypnotically transporting, but I've never gotten that sensation from their discs. "Shine on Heaven," from then band's new Dark Stars EP, has the same static circling quality of their previous work, leading me to believe that it's just sort of their thing. It's a shame, because the pairing of the band's cold piano notes with Mira Billotte's dynamic voice has some definite potential. I just wish she had a song with more of a varied structure to compliment, rather than cage her.

White Magic

Totally agree with you, Jeff. I saw White Magic open for Animal Collective in 2003 and it was phenomenal, but neither the Through the Sun Door EP nor the recent full-length captured the hypnotic vibe. Maybe it's just the nature of seeing real people make music, but something about the recordings seems less dark, less subversive. I keep hoping that the band will meet its potential one of these days.
