D.I.Y. nerds have no fear, the first Matador Records' stamped tunes from Ohio fuzz mongers Times New Viking have arrived, and there's no shortage of that sweet static. Once a function of necessity, lo-fi spit and crackle is now a matter of aesthetic choice. TNV emphatically chooses yes! "(My Head)," slated for both a 7" double A-side release and inclusion on January's Rip it Off, is the aural equivalent of watching TV with a piss poor antenna, wondering why this show about Hawaii features so much goddamn snow. Which is not to say it isn't pretty great, it's outsized chorus nearly transformed into pure melody by simulated studio ineptitude. They cheekily scream that they "need more money, cause they need more drugs," despite confessing in last year's standout "Love Your Daughters" that "getting high only makes us nervous." But if paranoia is going to result in more blasts of damaged goodness, by all means, buy their record, get them some cash.
