Track Review: The Futureheads "Broke Up the Time"

download
futureheads The new single by British post punks The Futureheads doesn't sound novel so much as ecstatic. The tightly wound guitars buzz and bob, seemingly accelerating in tempo every few seconds, pausing briefly only to sprint forward immediately again. It's not a new sound for the band, but it's got gusto. The lyrics and vocals aren't up to the head rush, sadly. The Futureheads one distinctive quality, a knack for giddy and complicated vocal arrangements, is half-assed here. Barry Hyde's funny Sunderland accent is left primarily by its lonesome, wanting for the explosive XTC harmonies his background singing compatriots are withholding. The lyrics are a bit muddled as well, with an easy to relate to plea for a halt to complaints about the hardships of modern times quickly segueing into some seriously confused metaphors. "Look at our cousins in the sea/ they seem to have it together/ they seem to be free/ but do they know/ what's going on the land?/ because they are down in the water/ with their heads in the sand." I'm not sure that's any good at all. You can jump around to it though. Everything doesn't have to be poetry, I guess.

I don't think it's a bad track, but didn't think it was quite up to par with their previous stuff.
