Track Review: Sunset Rubdown "Up on Your Leopard Upon the End of Your Feral Days"

When a serious sunset rubdown fan like myself describes the opening notes of the band's newly released song as the sort of music the Stonehenge dwarfs from Spinal Tap could have danced around to, you can trust that it's not just snark. The jig quality of this song's start is hard to shake until the spastic synths relent, and Spencer Krug's warbling vocals belt it out in "whoah" 's and "oh" 's, giving the melody less abrasive color. It isn't until the two minute mark that everything becomes more deliberate, and the apocalyptic torch song within becomes dominant. Then, like, wow.
Once slowed, it's obvious that Krug's odd metaphors have to be taken for allegory if considered at all. "The end of your feral days," are most easily taken as a signifier for the onset of maturity, but with all the wild beasts, hunters, and dead birds thrown around, it's tough to be certain. What can be empirically stated is that Spence is a song stylist of epic grandeur, following the line from his Frog Eyes mate Carey Mercer to their common root influence of the mighty Roxy Music. You may never know exactly where our man's coming from, but his sights are surely set on the end of days, and boy does he mean it.

You hit the nail right on the head about the epic grandeur. Krug is a true savant. This song is absurd in it's eccentricity, what a gift to truly dig this kind of song creation. The 1:18 mark drives me into a ridiculous frenzy. I can't wait to have this album, I wish I had the mp3 of this song instead of directing my browser to pitchfork from every computer I find my ass sitting in front of.
