Track Review: Studio "Life's a Beach!"

download
The nearly thirteen minute centerpiece from the Swedish techno-philes' latest, West Coast, starts its epic length with chunky early eighties synth tones and then quickly progresses through the decade from there. The rolling plastic drum beats that quickly file in are a nice addition, but the flood of cheddar guitar lines and "cloud of glitter" sound effects define mid '86 nostalgia a tad too loosely. With thirteen minutes to work with, their are moments of svelte clarity. Hand clap eruptions are always welcome, the darker tones that return around the 8 minute mark are a godsend, and ambient lapping waves do their part to cement the "Corvette on the coast" feel at large.
There's a little too much of everything (layers, funk bass, minutes) but it is consistently good for relaxing in a very specifically retro sort of a way. Perfect for washing dishes while daydreaming about busting drug rings in South Florida, or maybe coming back from the hair salon and getting in a few minutes of yoga while your giant perm sets.
