Though Of Montreal's live set often includes an odd cover or two, the selections have mainly made perfect sense. Well chosen songs by David Bowie, Talking Heads, the Fiery Furnaces, or even Gnarls Barkley have slipped seamlessly into the band's glam/pop/funk stage act without needing much revision. So it's sort of strange to hear Kevin Barnes' cover of Royal Trux's obscure 7" single "Back to School" meet its strung out source material half way. He emphasizes the original's funk bass and sporadic bursts of falsetto, and the song's knotted guitar is initially smoothed by a transposition to synthesizer as well. To his credit though, it never approaches a slick pop song. Barnes gamely honors Neil Haggerty's sloppy vocal delivery and eventually lets himself scribble wildly with impressionistic strumming. Whether this might be a sign towards a looser sound for his band or just a one off experiment is hard to say, but it's yet another interesting choice from a man who's clearly enjoying the best creative run of his career.
