Overshadowed right now by the stars they brought in to cover their own "All My Friends" and soon to be overshadowed by the bonkers 12 minute dance track ("Freak Out/ Starry Eyes") that rounds out the single's b-sides, LCD Soundsystem's live favorite "No Love Lost" cover is still a tasty treat. Joy Division's early recording was handicapped by thick skulled RCA producers, so even though James Murphy's model is structurally faithful to the original the disparity in production quality makes it all seem quite shiny and new. The kraut groove of the beginning portion hits harder and moves faster. The guitar scrapes are perhaps even more abrasive, though more subservient to the rhythm. Crucially, Murphy doesn't go for a full blown Ian Curtis impression, which is easier because Ian himself hadn't fully grown into the cold authoritative presence by the time he made this song. Murphy's matter of fact tone and the hint of a female voice on the rockin' "I Need it!" shout along lighten the mood considerably, even before the decision to edit the VU worshiping spoken word portion can register. While making Joy Division sound carefree is always going to be a risky proposition, this supercharged remake reminds us that the dark is made for dancing.
