Track Review: Late of the Pier "Bathroom Gurgle"

download
The British music press, who were like over excited bloggers before blogs existed, will be eager to lump Late of the Pier in with their silly "new rave" tag, because they are band of spazzes who play synths. The band's new disturbingly titled single, "Bathroom Gurgle," sounds much more diverse in influence than Klaxon's (admittedly their closest contemporaries), though I guess in theory one could wave a glow stick to it. The track starts with a glam robot stomp, and gives fat Gary Numan keys a less dour new wave kick. So far, so good. But the real grin mandate comes at the two minute mark when the backing track turns epic and singer Samuel Dust scrapes the heavens with a terrific, if slightly strained, falsetto that channels Beck channeling Prince. Then, on a dime, it's a herky jerky Devo party anthem. Then, back to the evangelical high notes just as fast. Though the twists are unexpected, they seem fairly organic, if unified only by a need for the listener to enjoy the hell out of themselves. A goal the Prefix editorial board wholeheartedly endorses.
Stumble It!
