Track Review: Hello, Blue Roses "Shadow Falls"

download
Only in the mp3 blogosphere could a cult musician's side project sit proudly atop the charts, which is the case with Dan Bejar's new Hello, Blue Roses project. The industriously e-mailed, "Shadow Falls," has been elbo.wing for space on aggregators' "most posted' lists alongside alt-perennials like Cat Power and Radiohead for a few weeks now. The song in question is one of the most austere in Bejar's book, free from Destroyer's mysteriously inscrutable riddles, and possessing none of the New Pornographers' power-pop thrills. The track is dominated by Dan and his duet partner Sydney Vermont's recitation, "My shadow falls, my shadow falls, my shadow falls, for you." Despite some frenetic guitar and the occasional appearance of a drum thud, their vocal interplay is really all you get. It's pretty and everything, but I'm not looking forward to an entire album this repetitive and sedate. At least Bejar's tied Spencer Krug for the 2007 "How Many Freaking Bands Can One Canadian Possibly Be In?" Cup. Four, it seems.

IMO there is plenty of good reason for its place on elbo.ws. B/n shadow falls and the one on their myspace page, i already have a good feeling that this is a winner. simple can be difficult to achieve. klingman, maybe the record will best be left to people who still enjoy music.Greg

Just so you know, Spencer Krug is already in 5 bands: Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, Swan Lake, and Fifths of Seven (an instrumental group). He wins in my book, although pretty much anything Bejar is involved in is excellent as well.
