download Glass Candy's very slyly released new album, B/E/A/T/B/O/X, has slid unexpectedly into darkhorse contention for my personal top ten list. Though the stellar neo-disco duo has been giving away their tracks on MySpace at a constant clip, the publicity from their Italians Do it Better better label has been practically non-existent for their eventual collection. Yet there it was on the record shelves, and eventually kicking my ass via my earbuds. Producer/ band member Johnny Jewel, who has quite a stable of female vocalists at his beck and call, seems to save his most devilish grooves for Glass Candy. The synth lines in "Beatific" are fat bordering on obese. Singer Ida No can occasionally over-reach with her diva emulation, but here is strong and smooth (excepting a late track call and response goof). More than anything, the synthesis of both contributors sounds hopelessly decadent. Over a blazing neon backdrop that continues to move from strength to slippery strength, Ida sighs, "People's rules and what they do are often different things." Die hard rockers who've tried to remain ignorant of this decade's disco resurgence are counseled to start breaking some commandments of their own.
