Track Review: Future of the Left "adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood"

When saddened fans of bonkers rock were mourning the early demise of the Welsh trio Mclusky, it may not have occurred to them that a near identical band would appear in its wake. From shared singer Andy Falkous' shredded pipes on down to the moderately amusing pitch black song titles, the first single from Future of the Left's September debut Curses could have easily come from any of the three Mclusky records in existence.
Always a piss take artist of the highest magnitude, Falkous starts the song out as a strange call and response semi-spiritual. Then it gets heeeeeeeeavy. Fillings loosening riffage and a booming drum line frame vocals that are surprisingly clear for their unhinged tone. While indie rock is technically still the assigned genre, I think metal heads might swoon as well. The lyrics don't have quite the acid wit of their predecessor's finest, but the impulse towards vicious headbangery has never been so uncontrollable. With a band this tight, the laughs can come later.

The picture reps the track well.

This track is metal in the same way that Jesus Lizard and Queens of the Stone Age are metal. Which is to say that I don't think metalheads will "gravitate" towards it as much as Jeff does. But it's a fun lil' swaggering tune, anyway. McClusky shoulda stuck around for another EP or TV special or something.
